Owners and trainers are being encouraged to be part of a historic night of greyhound racing ahead of the sport’s centenary celebrations at Dunstall Park Stadium later this month.

The UK’s newest venue will host a one-off fixture on Friday, July 24, to mark exactly 100 years since the first race was held at Belle Vue in Manchester.

A six-race card – replicating the first meeting on July 24, 1926 – including races for puppies, sprinters, stayers, British bred greyhounds and marathon dogs will be held, with each race worth £1,926 to the winner.

All other greyhounds will receive £192.60.

And connections of greyhounds are invited to be part of the evening by submitting entries before the deadline at 11am on Monday, July 20.

Martin Seal, Racing Manager at Dunstall Park Greyhound Stadium, said: “This is a fixture the like of which we will not witness again in our lifetimes.

“We have a fantastic variety of races, which no doubt connections of greyhounds in training would be proud to be represented in.

“We encourage those interested in being part of this historic night to drop our racing office a message, stating which greyhounds they would like to enter in each race.

“It’s fantastic each race will be worth £1,926 to the winner, and even better that the evening will help support our various homing partners who do fantastic work to find greyhounds their perfect home in retirement.”

Racing begins at 7.58pm with a puppy contest over 480m, before races two and three are held over Dunstall Park’s 660m and 270m distances.

The card will conclude with a 480m British Bred race, a marathon and a 480m open race.

Tickets for the evening are priced £75 and include a three-course meal, a race card and entertainment.

General admission is also available for £2, with proceeds from ticket sales supporting greyhound homing.

Entries for each of the six races on the night should be submitted to dunstallpark@gbgbracing.co.uk by 11am on Monday, July 20.

Meanwhile greyhound racing continues at Dunstall Park this Saturday night with the BGBF British Bred Puppy Cup semi-finals. Doors open at 5.30pm, with the first race off at 6.20pm. Tickets for finals night on July 18 are free to all racegoers who book online in advance via www.dunstallpark-greyhounds.co.uk.
